When I first met Kathrin and Thomas it was quite strange because I knew almost everything about them. When they got married, for how they have been living in San Francisco, where they are from and when they did their last trip with Kathrin’s parents. Sounds like a stalker? Well, maybe I was a little bit of a stalker, but just because I discovered their personal blog about their relocation to San Francisco. It was loaded with helpful tips and stories about everyday fortunes and misfortunes.
One comment led to another til we met for a dinner and became very good friends. So good that they let me do an apartment tour for Fluxi On Tour.
I really love their space. Victorian 2 bedroom apartment located in San Francisco’s most trendy neighborhood, the Mission. An eclectic mix of modern and romantic style flows through all rooms. Without braking the bank the couple has collected vintage pieces and combined them with new furniture. Get inspired and enjoy the interview.
Why Mission and not some other neighborhood?
To be honest, we had a crazy landlord at our previous apartment and needed just to get out.
We browsed Craigslist at the right time. Luckily we even were able to go down with the rent because there where some small issues.
Favorite spot in your apartment?
Definitely the sofa in front of the fireplace which is not working, but we put some candles inside for cozy feeling.
What was hair-tearing while moving in?
There wasn’t really something that made us crying.
Always in your kitchen?
I always have some cheese, could die for cheese. My favorite one is the Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery. And Thomas loves german sausage. Almost every Sunday we make a trip to the Fort Mason farmers market to get some sausage from an authentic german seller.
Any tips when looking to rent an apartment in San Francisco?
Hm… San Francisco is a very tough market. The rent raised even more in the past months. Some people offer to pay even more just to get the keys. When you are at the open house try to speak with the landlord, make an impression but don’t be aggressive. Say something nice about the apartment and how you would decorate it. This way the landlord sees that you are really interested in.
When looking for furniture and home accessories, what is your destination?
There are couple of them. Crate&Barrel for good quality and design. We also love to shop at Ikea or CB2. Mission is full of stores for vintage accessories.
And of course the Alameda Flea Market. Always a good spot for everything vintage.
Can you share some favorite local San Francisco food spots?
Oh my gosh, where to start?! San Francisco is so diverse. There is something for everybody. We love to spent the Sunday by going to the local farmers markets or having brunch at Local’s Corner at Portrero Hill. I get my cup of coffee mostly at Ritual. For delicious take away dinners we love to order from Udupi Palace, south indian cuisine. You must try the dosas. If you are out for pizza you have to stop by at Pizza Delfina. Almost forgot the Bi-Rite Ice Creamery. A Mission must-visit.
How do you relax in San Francisco?
As with the food there is so many to do in San Francisco. Our favorite spots are Lands End and Crissy Fields for long walks. Golden Gate park for bike rides. It’s flat and the park is closed to the traffic on Sundays.
Thanks Kathrin & Thomas for having me!
