Winding stairs, small hills, quaint homes, narrow, quiet streets and a cozy beach is what makes this neighborhood in Hamburg so unique. Treppenviertel (Stairs Quarter) is an old fisherman's village in the middle of a big city. It was always my place to go when I wanted some peaceful and relaxing time without driving for miles. It's a place where you can unwind by walking on a beach, hiking more than 4,900 stairs and marvel at all the small homes or sit down in the sand and enjoy a good book.
Some people who's great-great-grandfather was an fisherman in Hamburg are so lucky know that he left them his small home in Hamburg's Treppenviertel, because nowadays this area is for more well-heeled people. Which shouldn't stop you from visiting, and it's noticeable that there are never big touristy crowds traipsing through the streets. You will find some art galleries, interior shop, few cafes and a very nice hotel, the Strand Hotel.
For some Fischbrötchen, hearty Bauernfrühstück, cold beer or hot chocolate and unbeatable view you should take a seat at Kajüte SB 12. Small cozy restaurant on the beach. If you are looking for a romantic dinner with a traditional, maritime flair you should opt for the restaurant Zum Bäcker. You won't need much time to discover Treppenviertel but it's definitely worth visiting and it's my choice for a staycation weekend. Would love to hear where is your weekend escape?
