It’s bean a while since our vacation in Hamburg, but I still have one spot to share with you that I discovered back in August. I have told you that there were so many new shops popping up everywhere but this one, Hello Home, this one is a pretty special. Not only that they are located directly at the Fischmarkt within Hamburg’s new cool design block, the owners Karo and Balthasar have also a great concept behind this bright and colorful store. Their mission is to bring good design and quality for a affordable price to our everyday lives. With the focus on Scandinavian design, but also including designs from other European countries, they are always on a lookout for unique pieces. Hello Home offers everything you need to make your home individual and cozy. From big furniture pieces to candle holders you will find everything your design heart is craving for. So if you are living in Hamburg or just visiting this is definitely your place to go. I had the pleasure to chit-chat with them on how they opened their store and how they find all the pieces for Hello Home. So read on and I hope you enjoy another insight into shop owner’s world.
Hello Home is one-stop-shop for all things decoration and home. What led you to became a shop owner?
After years of working in corporate jobs and working on projects, we couldn’t really feel, we made the step to do what we really love. And we love good design. Spending the day with design furniture, bold colors, pretty styles and fine materials is so much more rewarding and compensates us for all the hard work that comes with been a shop owner. We love to see what great reactions customers have when it comes to our idea and our concept behind Hello Home. It’s so motivating and it shows us that we are doing something right.
Describe the idea of your store? What is so unique about Hello Home?
We want to make good design approachable. There are so many people looking for quality, new and unique pieces for their homes but sometimes the idea fails because oft the price tag. That’s were we want to help; to offer good quality and good design for a reasonable price.
The pieces at Hello Home are very well selected. How do you find all the designers and pieces? Finding unique piececs can sometimes be the same as finding the needle in a haysack. Our eyes are always open, looking for one-of-a-kind design that hasn’t been seen everyweher. We are not only limited to featuring German design. The other day we were scouting new items in Stockholm, because we adore scandinavian designs. You can tell that the main theme of Hello Home is influenced by scandinavian design, but we also feature pieces from Italy, Spain or France.
What do you keep in mind when choosing the items for Hello Home?
It has to be love at first sign. Things that don’t really convince us at the beginning will probably not make it on the shelves. We are not running after each and every new trend, we are fascinated with great colors, styles and most of all, materials. This autumn we are in love with geometric shapes, chopper and marble.
As every job, being a shop owner has also pro and con. What do you love most about your job? What’s not so great?
We are delightful to see how good people react when it comes to our concept. The daily business with all the customers and pretty things it that what we deeply enjoy. It’s also amazing to have the possibility to reinvent yourself from time to time without loosing the main idea of our store. Hello Home has it’s own character, that refines itself everyday, but also makes boundaries when it comes to thing we don’t like. Sometimes we just have too many ideas, but way too less time to work on them immediately.
Have you any advice for somebody who would like to open a store?
You have to believe 100% in your idea. You really have to want it. Building the store from scratch is whether easy nor quick task. Having endurance and having a goal in mind helps a lot. Also if you really believe in your idea and you have a realistic plan to achieve this, you will probably succeed. I really believe that you can see if people are doing something with passion or not. Only with passion you can make other people love your idea, you store or every other business.

Tell us some of your favorite Hamburg spots?
Hamburg’s harbor is still fascinating. We are so happy to have our space directly here on the Fischmarkt. It’s really something special having the river just in front of us. The area is definitely worth-visiting. Especially because it has developed into a hot spot for design lovers.
