After all French cafes this city has to offer it was time for something new. A new romantic cafe from an old romantic era and beautiful countries that might have slightly fallen into oblivion. Recently opened at the corner of Gough and Oak in Hayes Halley, 20th Century Cafe awakes the beauty, the style and the delicacy of Eastern Europe.

With original details like an old fashioned chopper register, sweet and savory treats from Austria, Hungry or Russia, pastry chef Michelle Polzine creates a charming space to have lunch or coffee break with your friends. Lots of light and the high ceilings with wide windows give you the feeling that you are back in Vienna 20th century, waiting for your train to arrive while enjoying some coffee and some soft pastries.

It was my first time there, with my lovely friends Einat and Shiri, and I needed something savory. I had the kale-paprika relish sandwich which was really delicious – note I’m not a big kale fan, but can only recommend it. Next time I will definitely go for some of Michelle’s pastry creations.
